With a Dog and a Cat, Every Day is Fun Vol 1 Review

Hidekichi Matsumoto lives with her dog, Inu, and her cat, Neko, and began drawing this simple, gag-manga chronicling her daily experiences with her quirky and loveable pets and posting it on Twitter. It became so popular online that it was eventually published in physical books and I’m glad that it has been licensed in English, because this is a very amusing series.

They sure look like they’re having fun!

A lot of the humor in With a Dog and a Cat, Every Day is Fun, is mined from contrasting the differences between the two pets. Inu is hyper and affectionate, while Neko is moody and intense. Surprisingly, the two get along pretty well and, together, they mangage to cause all manner of trouble for their owner. Having grown up with cats, I could relate to a lot of the jokes about Neko’s bizarre behaviour and Inu’s antics were adorable and equally funny. Whether you’re a cat or a dog person, there’s bound to be something in this manga that will make you laugh.

The sketchy art style is cute and complements the comedy well. I loved Inu’s joyful expressions and Neko’s murderous glares! I’ve started following Matsumoto’s twitter account so I can get regular doses of Neko and Inu. Even if I can’t read Japanese, I can still bask in their cuteness.

In short, this is a fun one. Definitely recommended for animal lovers and anyone in the mood for a playful and easy-going comedy.
