Unicorns Aren’t Horny Vol 1 Review

I love a good pun title, and Unicorns Aren’t Horny is a good pun. However, it’s not an accurate title, as Uni the unicorn is horny, in both the literal sense and the carnal sense. Horny for the concept of virginity, that is!

Synopsis:

Emuko is a virgin and she isn’t happy about it. She wants to have an epic romance with the Prince of her dreams, but things never seem to work out for her on the dating front. Her wish for companionship unexpectedly comes true, in a sense, when a magnificent unicorn decides to take shelter from a storm in her apartment. When Uni discovers that Emuko is a virgin he’s absolutely thrilled, since unicorns as naturally drawn to “innocent and pure” maidens. While Emuko is a little weirded-out by his fixation on her virginity, she decides to let him stay with her, and thus their strange life as roommates begins!

Review:

Semi Ikuta’s Unicorns Aren’t Horny is a comedy manga that has a mildly funny concept that it proceeds to flog until the joke is dead, which unfortunately happens pretty quickly.

That isn’t to say that this manga is a total waste; there are some amusing moments and Emuko and Uni have a pretty fun, odd-couple style dynamic, with Uni being kind of conceited and ridiculous, resulting in the more level-headed Emuko being constantly annoyed with him. The issue is that the manga just isn’t as funny as I was hoping it would be and the whole, Uni is obsessed with, and weirdly turned on by, Emuko’s virginal state shtick, gets old quickly and there isn’t much else going on to mine for comedy.

I think it might have helped if there had been more characters for Emuko and Uni to interact with, but most of this volume is focused on just the two of them hanging out in their apartment. Emuko’s mom makes a brief appearance to grill her daughter on her love-life, but she’s not wacky enough to be particularly interesting.

Towards the end of the book, however, the cast is finally expanded with the addition of Biko, a mature and sexy woman who Emuko befriends because they share similar tastes in manga. It turns out that Biko has a mythological companion as well, but hers is a demonic horse known as a bicorn who’s drawn to promiscuous women and is preoccupied with sex.

Biko is a fun character and I liked the cute scenes of her and Emuko bonding over their mutual love of shojo manga. I wish she’d appeared earlier, but Biko’s presence gives me hope that the series could become funnier as it goes.

I didn’t love Unicorns Aren’t Horny, but there’s enough potential here that I think I’ll give the second volume a try to see if it becomes more entertaining once Biko is a regular character. If you’re looking for a zany, unicorn-themed comedy, however, I think I’d recommend checking out My Father is a Unicorn instead.

Final Score: 6.5 out of 10.
