The Girl I Want is So Handsome: The Complete Manga Collection Review

I’ve managed to drag myself away from my Nintendo Switch and the newest Pokemon game long enough to sit down and get some blogging done.

So, before I get sucked back into another video game trance, let’s review some yuri manga!

Hina’s high school life is off to a less than auspicious start. On her very first day, she accidently bumps headfirst into a stranger’s busty chest! The girl who’s boobs she face-planted into is the cool and handsome Shiki and she handles the situation gracefully, leaving poor Hina bowled over by her kindness and good-looks.

Shiki is a girl of many charms!

Completely smitten with the older girl, Hina considers joining the basketball team in order to be closer to Shiki, who is a star player on the team. Unfortunately, Hina has zero athletic ability. She’s going to have to come up with a new strategy if she wants to stay close to her crush and get to know her better!

Yuama’s The Girl I Want is so Handsome! is an uncomplicated yuri manga that features minimal drama and plenty of fluffy romance.

I appreciated having all of the manga collected into a single omnibus volume, since it’s quite a quick read. Flipping through the pages again for this review, it’s surprising how little actually happens in this book.

Hina has some minor difficulties to overcome when she first gets involved with the basketball team and decides to be the team manager, so I can’t say the manga is devoid of conflict. One of Shiki’s teammates is thoroughly unimpressed with the fact that Hina’s only volunteering because she’s interested in Shiki, not basketball.

Luckily, Hina is very motivated to do well in her role as team manager.

Hina manages to win her over with her strong work ethic, so it isn’t long before that plot thread in neatly resolved and the story can focus on Hina’s quest to woo the dashing Shiki.

Hina and Shiki’s romance proceeds smoothly from day one. Hina is head-over-heels for Shiki as soon as they meet, and Shiki falls for her soon after. They’re both honest characters and not ones to rest on their laurels, so it isn’t long before they’re happily dating. Shiki and Hina make a cute couple and their relationship is wholesome and sweet, with barely any complications to trouble our heroines. The only real relationship drama the two experience comes very close to the end of the book, and the pair were able to work things out pretty quickly and get back to being lovey-dovey.

Seeing as I’m describing the manga’s story as somewhat uneventful, you might be getting the impression that I found the book to be boring, but I actually found it to be a pleasant read.

Hina is a bit of a closet nerd, and her romantic delusions and freak-outs over how cool Shiki is were pretty funny. Hina is very expressive and she’s a hilarious hopeless romantic!

With emphasis on the hopeless!

It was soothing to read a simple romance with such earnest and sweet characters who are considerate of each other and willing to talk things out. On top of that, I found Yuama’s art style to be adorable!

If you’re looking for a yuri manga that’s low on angst and high on cuteness, The Girl I Want is So Handsome! is a fun and light-hearted manga that should satisfy your craving for sugary romance.

Final Score: 7 out of 10.
