More Yuri Manga Mini Reviews

A lot of fun new yuri titles have been released in the last few months, much to my delight. I’m always ready to fall in love with a fresh romance story, and this batch of yuri manga had a few gems in the mix.

Let’s get into the reviews!

I Can’t Believe I Slept With You! Vol 1 Review

Koduka is at the end of her rope. She quit her job, has been unable to find a new one and her savings have run out, leaving her months behind on her rent! That’s when her landlady shows up at her door with an unorthodox proposal. She’s willing to forgive portions of Koduka’s debt in exchange for favours, and the first favour she asks for is that Koduka have sex with her! Koduka isn’t into women – or at least she doesn’t think she is – but she’d been busy drowning her sorrows in alcohol when the landlady arrived and, thanks all that liquid courage in her system, this plan doesn’t sound half bad…

Review:

I wasn’t really sure if I was going to like this manga at the start. The whole set up with the landlady using the situation to get sexual favours seemed more than a little gross. Not really an ideal way to begin a romance.

Thankfully, I Can’t Believe I Slept With You turned out to be less sleazy and more sweet than I was expecting. It helps that the two don’t sleep with each other again after the first time, and it is also implied that the landlady’s initial plan hadn’t actually been to extort Koduka. Regardless, if coercion and dubious consent are something you would rather avoid in your fiction, these elements are present in the early part of the story and you should exercise your discretion when deciding if you want to give this manga a try.

That said, I did manage to get quite into the plot once the characters started getting to know each other and the story focused on their growing friendship and feelings for each other. Both ladies have had struggles in their lives and their relationship develops in a way that’s pretty cute. I’d say it’s worth a try if you’re looking for a yuri series that’s more on the sexy side and don’t mind a bit of angst.

Catch These Hands Vol 1 Review

Takebe was a delinquent when she was a teen and misses the days when she was the toughest girl around. Nowadays, all her friends have moved on with their lives and are getting married and having kids. Meanwhile, Takebe is still working a string of part-time jobs and feels like she’s being left behind.

Just when she decides to put her days as a ruffian behind her for good, Takebe runs into Soramori, her former rival who she used to clash with all the time. Their fights always used to end in a draw and Takebe is dissatisfied with the fact that they could never settle things between them. Soramori seems to feel the same way, since she challenges Takebe to a final fight – but the stakes of this battle are going to be a little different than usual. If she wins, Soramori want Takebe to become her girlfriend!

Review:

Murata’s Catch These Hands is a laidback comedy with a sweet yuri romance at its core. Takebe and Soramori are both a little awkward (though Takebe is definitely more socially awkward than Soramori) and theirs is a slow burn romance, despite the fact that they start dating pretty quickly. Takebe isn’t as into the idea of the two of them going out as Soramori is, though she does go along with it as a matter of principle. Soramori, meanwhile, has been obsessed with Takebe for years and is willing to wait for her and put up with her grumpiness and childish efforts to discourage her feelings.

So, instead of being lovey-dovey, the two wind up competing over everything, including who can catch the most fish or get the most likes on their weird social media posts. I found Takebe and Soramori’s antics very amusing and enjoyed the lack of any major drama in their courtship. This looks like Catch These Hands will be a solid romantic-comedy and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a more low-key yuri tale.

Monologue Woven For You Vol 1 Review

Haruka loved theatre and wanted nothing more than to tread the boards, but things didn’t go the way she was expecting and she ultimately gave up on her dream. Now in university, Haruka unexpectedly finds herself drawn to Nao, a girl in a theatre troupe who’s chasing the very dream that Haruka abandoned. Through their blossoming romance, Haruka begins to rediscover her passion and is proud of Nao’s perseverance, but will she remain content with simply supporting Nao? Or will she find the resolve to try again?

Review:

Monologue Woven For You is a lovely full color manga with an adorable central romance and more than a little dramatic intrigue. Haruka and Nao have a sweet and loving relationship, but Haruka is unwilling to tell Nao about how she used to perform as well. Her reasons for quitting theatre remain a mystery and I’m really curious to see what happened to Haruka that caused her to give up on something she loved so deeply. Will Nao manage to convince her to pick up her discarded dream again? I hope so, as I’d love to see these sweet girls try to chase their dreams together.

This is a really cute series and perfect for anyone looking for a fluffy yuri manga with just a little drama to keep things interesting.

Final Score: 8 out of 10.
